THE FACELESS

Recently I've found myself interested in death metal all thanks to one band, The Faceless. After seeing that Meshuggah and Cynic were on a tour, I saw they were playing with this epic sounding band. I decided to give them a gander and I am so glad I did. At first I wasn't drawn to this band due to the harsh death metal vocals, but it grew on me and now I can't get enough as I constantly search for more bands that are great like the faceless. They are not your typical death metal band, I would describe them as technical progressive death metal. As your listening to this band you can obviously hear the effort the band puts into every song. I cant say that one song is bad out of their two cds, Akeldama and Planetary Duality.

I recomend you start out with: The Ghost of a Stranger, An Autopsy, Pestilance, The Ancient Covenant, Xenochrist

GOJIRA

As I was reading an interview with Meshuggah, I heard them praise this band Gojira. I decided I'd check them out, and Im so glad I did. Gojira has a sound of booming intensity with unique technical riffs, powerful drums and a fresh sound making it so badass. The lyrical topics of Gojira were interesting to me because they sing about their concerns about the environment. They have four cds but the two I have (The Link, The Way of All Flesh) are supurb.

I recomend you start out with: Wisdom, Toxic Garbage Island, Embrace the World, The Art of Dying

AESOP ROCK

Rap can be a great genre, but a lot of the "rappers" out today defile rap. Thankfully there are those who still keep it real, like Aesop Rock. The first thing that struck me while listening to Aesop was his voice. It plainly sounds bad ass, and his rhymes are so complex and fast its hard to not like his raps. I haven't gotten a chance to hear all of his stuff but out of the three cds I have (Labor Days, Bazooka Tooth, None Shall Pass) I can recommend them all without doubt.

I recommend you start with: Daylight, Freeze, Mars Attacks, Boombox, Citronella, None Shall Pass

MESHUGGAH

When you just want to hear something that is rough, complex, and heavy, I recommend breaking out some Meshuggah. They're classified as math-metal and experimental metal, so if your looking for something normal Meshuggah isn't what you're looking for. The riffs are blistering and use complex timing.
For those who don't like too heavy of music, I recommend their first cd Contradictions Collapse; it sounds like a heavier (but not too heavy) Metallica. My two favorite albums of what I've heard are Catch 33, and I. Both of those cds are actually one song. Catch 33 is one song but is divided into 13 tracks whereas I is a one track album. The track is 21 minutes, but don't be deterred; these albums do not feel like one song. Meshuggah's current album, Obzen is also very good, but is a little less complex then some previous albums. Another favorite album is Chaosphere. This is a great album which incorporates all the great elements of Meshuggah, with complex timing and occasional avant garde jazz elements.

I recommend you start with: Disenchantment, Entrapment, Dehumanization, Rational Gaze, Combustion, New Millennium Cyanide Christ and I

MR. BUNGLE

I found out about this band a while ago but i never truely checked them out. I rediscovered them and I am so glad I did. This band mixes Metal, Jazz, Funk, Electronica, circus music, ska etc... As it sounds, this band is awesome to listen to and is a big mix of a lot of genres together

They have three albums, Mr. Bungle, Disco Volante, and California.
  • Mr. Bungle is the best cd to listen to first to see if you like Mr. Bungle, it is my current favorite.
  • Disco Volante is an incredibly weird album considered to be avant-garde metal. Hardcore Mr. Bungle fans will love this album but it certainly needs some getting used to
  • California is another great album that has a cool swing feel to it
I recomend you start with: Carousel, Stubb (a Dub), My Ass is on Fire, Desert Search for Techno Allah and Goodbye Sober day
